Wolves of the Battlefield

The Japanese name of the game - Senjou no Ookami - loosely translated means Wolf (ookami) of the (no) Battlefield (senjou) (or Battlefield of the wolf), hence the name of the page. This also explains the wolf on the medal, and the text "Wolf Force" on the bottom of it. The 3 stars on the wolf is maybe decoration, or maybe it is a symbol of the "Wolf Force" : in the original Arcade version there are 3 soldiers in the team, each one of them represents a star?

Unused stuff in the Arcade version

There's no need for the Tile Editor in Kawaks to view the unused stuff, since there is a built in tileviewer in CPS1 games, like Mercs. Just go there in the Test menu. I can't believe I haven't noticed it. Anyway, Johnny made shots out of the hidden stuff he found, with (hopefully) the right palette. Funny, the Bulletproof vest has the exact same resolution as the one in the Genesis version.
Also, there are small Icon versions of every item in the whole game, not just the few shown in the top row. Even the unused ones have them.
What really bothers me is that cigarette. WTF is up with it? What would it supposed to do? I guess if I would play Senjou no Ookami 1 (Commando), that would solve the question.

Reused personalitys

Who played both the Arcade and Genesis versions probably noticed this:
The 3 main characters of the Arcade version are reused as the soldiers of the Original mode on the Genesis. Both of their art, and their in-game sprite colours are the same.
Joseph Gibson is Rifle
Howard Powell is Burner
Thomas Clarke is Launcher

Looks like Laser and Homing are creations designed for the Genesis version.
Also, Homing is called Stet in the EU Megadrive manual. I don't know if the other versions manuals call him like that.

Name puns:
In the Arcade version, all of the soldiers names have the same amount of characters.
The soldiers in the Genesis Original mode use the weapons that are set to their name.

The secret code

This one was sent in by Johnny:

- The high score table in the G/MD version spells out the cheat for the secret extra hard difficulty mode: "ORI GIN ALM ODE ABC STA RT" = "ORIGINAL MODE ABC START" ie press A+B+C+Start on Original Mode on the main menu.

That's what I like in old Genesis games, you can always find hidden stuff in them, even after playing with them for years. I'm playing this game for about 9 years now, and I never spot this text. I knew about the code though.

Unused stuff in the Genesis Version:
I found these text when I took a look inside the ROM. This stuff was in the place where the text used for the shelters is placed in Original mode, so it's possible that it was used for one of those "Secret Infos" that you can buy for medals. I never found it in the game, even though I buy all of those. This is the correct order as they should appear on the screen.
  • The blue squad has bullet
    proof vests
  • The red squad has heat
    resistant suits
Also, there are several unused music tracks as well, they were used in the Arcade version, but they aren't used in the Genesis one. Like the sound played when you insert a coin in the Arcade, or when you have to enter your name after a game for your new high score. They were probably left there while the game was ported.
